TEACHING

Cora Beth has taught Classics in a wide range of settings, from primary schools to prisons. She’s based in the North-East of England, but her students come from all over the world.

With an MEd, an MA in Online and Distance Education, and several other postgraduate qualifications in different areas of Education, Cora Beth’s teaching initiatives are research-led and draw on continuing professional development.

Teaching Awards and Fellowships

In 2025 Cora Beth has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education award for Most Innovative Teacher of the Year! Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Edinburgh on 13th Nov.

The National Teaching Fellowship (NTF) Scheme celebrates and recognises individuals who have made an outstanding impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession in higher education. The award, which has been running since 2000, denotes individual teaching excellence as well as the winner’s achievements in raising the profile of excellence in higher education and their commitment to professional enhancement.

Recognition of Excellence in Teaching Award 2020

The RET Award was presented in 2020 by The Open University in recognition of Excellence in Student Engagement, for Cora Beth’s work on accessibility in online teaching.

SFHEA: Senior Fellowship of Advance HE

Senior Fellowship of the HEA (and an OU Applaud Senior Fellowship) was awarded to Cora Beth in 2018 in recognition of her commitment to improving her teaching practice through research and scholarship.

Festival of Learning Nomination

Cora Beth was delighted to be nominated in 2019 for an Award at the Festival of Learning, ‘the biggest celebration of lifelong learning in England’.


For several years Cora Beth has served on the Judging Panel of the Global Undergraduate Awards.


Recent and Ongoing Teaching Projects

Classical Studies Support is Cora Beth’s study support website, set up in 2017 to provide her Open University Classics students with additional resources, opportunities and advice. It has a regular student and graduate following, and has been viewed nearly 200,000 times.

The Relaxed Tutorial Project is a scholarship project funded by FASSTEST at The Open University, trialling a different approach to online tutorials.

For the 2022 CA Conference, Cora Beth helped to put together a Neurodiverse Classics panel, including neurodivergent students, university teachers and schoolteachers. She hosted videos from panellists on the Asterion website, showcasing different approaches to teaching and learning.

Cora Beth occasionally leads school groups around Arbeia Roman Fort, working with Hellene School Travel.

Cora Beth is currently engaged in developing resources for teachers, to give an insider perspective on the varied needs of neurodivergent students.

Cora Beth regularly writes book reviews for teachers and students, for the Classics For All Reading Room.
